A Lagos State House of Assembly aspirant, Moses Nnaekpe shared photos and video of a woman who brutally beaten by her husband.

“I was coming home this evening and I stumbled on this woman that was beaten by her husband. I took her to the husband to find out what happened, he told me it's none of my business that he has the right to beat her. I quickly sent her for treatment and got the idiot arrested.

Every home has its challenge, but we must not result to this. If this guy isn't tamed now, he may kill this woman one day. #ReportDomesticViolence
#HonMosesKashimawo.”

The violent husband was arrested last Friday, and has been in cell. The victim on Sunday made an appeal for his release but asked that he is made to sign an undertaken stating tha the will never beat her again.

WOMEN, MOTHERS SHOULD LEAD SECURITY EDUCATION AT HOMES

Salamatu Ibrahim

Ace broadcaster and co-anchor of Kakkaki Programme on Africa Independent Television (AIT), Salamatu Ibrahim has  said that Nigeria’s security situation will improve for the better if women take the lead in teaching their children issues of security at the family level through constant orientation and monitoring of what they read and post on the social media.

Salamatu made this suggestion as one of the guest speakers at the Faculty of Humanities, Social and Managements Science seminar series held at the Bingham University, Karu, Nasarawa State.

According to her, “Despite the positive roles played by social media in exposing crimes, cases of kidnapping and other security issues in the country, the use of the social media has fueled terrorism with the tool of propaganda”.

She said, it is not uncommon to see posts that activates ethno-religious and political crises from those she called “unpatriotic Nigerians”, hence, mothers can help educate their children on the contents they post and read.

A Professor of Political Science at the Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, USA, called for trust between government, communities, religions and ethnic groups as the social media plays very important roles.

While emphasizing the impossibility of censoring contents on the social media, the University don said there is the need for those who handle government’s information to always provide accurate government information to avoid distortion by members of the public.

Other speakers at the seminar called for self-censorship, with a call on journalists to verify information they take from the social media platforms as the general election approaches.

WHY LATE MARRIAGE WILL AFFECT YOUR CHANCES OF GETTING PREGNANT

Dr Babatunde Okewale

An Obstetrician & Gynaecologist (O&G) and a fertility expert is the Chairman and Chief Medical Director of St Ives Specialist Hospital with branches in Lagos and Abeokuta, Ogun State.
In this interview, he speaks on the reason for the increase in infertility in the world today, why Invitro Fertilisation (IVF) is expensive and how to prevent infertility.

What are the causes of infertility in men and women?

I think one of the best ways to understand the cause of infertility is first to know how conception occurs. There are basically five criteria for anyone who is trying to conceive. The first thing is that the husband’s sperm must be of good quality and quantity. The second requirement is that the woman herself must know her fertile period; when she is ovulating because it is only when they make love at that time that pregnancy can occur. The third one is that the inside of the womb of the woman must be able to accept and keep a pregnancy. So, there shouldn’t be anything in the womb that can disrupt pregnancy whether it is fibroid, adhesions or polyps. The fourth requirement is that the fallopian tube of the woman must be opened so that the eggs that are formed in the ovary can enter the tube and mix with the sperm that are coming so that fertilisation can occur. Finally, the woman must be producing quality eggs. If you see anybody that got pregnant naturally, what it meant was that those five requirements were fulfilled. Conversely, if there is a problem with any of those five things, it could cause infertility; if there is problem with the sperm, a woman has problem with her menstrual period, if  the inside of the womb cannot accept pregnancy, if her  fallopian tubes are blocked or she doesn’t produce quality eggs every month.

It seems cases of infertility are on the increase these days. What is responsible for that?

That is very true and it is not only in Nigeria, it is a worldwide phenomenon. And part of the reasons are these; as industrialisation increases worldwide, pollution increases, especially in the third world countries and there are quite a lot of pollutants that affect men’s sperm and sometimes affect women’s fertility. Some of the industries that have been implicated are industries such as plastic industry, industry that produce paints because you have heavy metals in paint production. Pollution generally affects the sperm count of men unknowingly because of the industrial pollution that goes into the water system of the populace, water gets contaminated. People are digging borehole and don’t know where the water they are getting is coming from. The second thing is that women are not getting married early again unlike in the past. The older a woman gets the more difficult it is to achieve a pregnancy. In fact, the best time, for any woman to achieve a pregnancy is between age 20 and 30. Once you are hitting 35, the ability to achieve a pregnancy starts decreasing at a very fast rate such that by 40, for most women, they find it extremely difficult to achieve a pregnancy. The other things are infections. The kind of infection that affect fertility has changed over the years. In the 70s, we were talking about Gonorrhoea which could be easily detected but the kind of s3xually transmitted disease that causes blocked tubes and affect sperms now are different. These ones are in the group of Chlamydia, they don’t show any sign and would have done their damage before you know it. So, indiscriminate unprotected s3x too can cause infertility. Also, excessive smoking and alcohol intake affect sperm but they are minor. Pollution, industrialisation and infections are playing a big role in infertility.

Is IVF the only solution to infertility?

No. In fact, IVF is just one of the solutions in infertility. It is not all the infertility causes that you need IVF for. If you have menstrual disorder, all you just need is an ovulation drug that would correct the problem, or if the problem is fibroid that is blocking some passage ways that will allow sperm to meet with eggs; if you remove the fibroid that should sort out the problem. IVF is however the first treatment option in women that have blocked tube. What it does is that it bypasses the tube and makes fertilisation occur outside of the womb.

Some women have done IVF four, five times without it resulting in pregnancy and some of them later conceive naturally. What is responsible for that?

The truth of the matter is; before you embark on IVF you must be sure that that is what is needed. It is not a situation of let me try IVF then try other things. There are some indications for IVF that lent themselves into the fact that after having an IVF, you can still conceive naturally. For example in cases of unexplained infertility (when all examination had been done and there is no reason for why pregnancy has not occurred), we advice IVF because what it does is to ensure that both the egg and the sperm meet. In such couples, they had IVF, got pregnant and have a baby. Subsequent conception does not have to be IVF. The drugs used in the IVF have made some correction in their reproductive hormones. It does happen but it is very rare. So, the reason IVF fails is that people don’t go for test to find out whether that is what they really need. Another reason IVF fails is either because the quality of the woman’s egg is low or the quality of the womb is not fertile or okay. But if the womb is very fertile, if you put an embryo there, it will grow. The problem in women is that as a woman grows older, the quality of the egg and the quality of the womb start deteriorating.  IVF is usually very successful in women below the age of thirty. As a woman grows older, the failure rate of IVF starts increasing. In fact, let me give you some statistics; if a woman is  below 30, her chances of getting pregnant in a cycle of IVF is 60 per cent, while in a woman who is 40 years old, her chances of getting pregnant in more than one cycle is not more than 25 per cent. What have made the differences are the age and the quality of the egg and the inside of the womb. The best time for pregnancy in women either naturally or IVF is below the age of 35. Most failures in IVF are in women who are using their own eggs above 35 years old. The converse again is if a woman is 60 and wants to get pregnant by IVF and decides to use the egg of a younger person, the chance that she will get pregnant with the egg of a 3o-year-old is high.

Talking about pregnancies, why do women have miscarriages?

Generally speaking, the incidence of miscarriages in natural conception is about one in four. Most people might not know that.  In fact, most people have miscarriages even before they missed their periods. What causes miscarriage in the early stage of pregnancy mostly is abnormality in the formation of the embryo. Again, if people get married late, the incidence of abnormality increases. Any woman who gets pregnant above the age of 35 should ideally be screened for Down syndrome. For most abnormal pregnancies, the way the body deals with them is to let them go (miscarriage) before 12 weeks.

IVF is on the high side for many Nigerians, especially in the rural areas. What are you doing to ensure that they too can benefit from this procedure?

What we have been doing for the past 10 years is that we work closely with a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) that twice in a year our patients pay only 50 per cent while it pays us the balance. So, we do a promo twice a year courtesy the NGO. Ideally, the government should step in, in such situation. In UK and some other socially responsible societies, the government steps in. In UK for instance, the government ensures that you have free IVF for the first three cycles it is only if nothing happens after three cycles, that you start paying. And people that can’t afford it, it is highly subsidised because infertility is a social problem. Although our governments don’t see it that way, they are more interested in population control so more money is being put into contraception. But for a couple trying to conceive, infertility is a social problem and government should be able to help. Having said that, IVF is an expensive procedure all over the world not only in Nigeria.  Part of the reason is that an IVF laboratory is a high tech lab. There must be light 24 hours and there is a level of sanitation that must be present in the lab. Though it is not as expensive as heart or kidney transplant. The only problem is that people don’t see infertility as a diseased process, they only see it as a lifestyle issue.

5 REASONS YOU SHOULD NOT MARRY A WOMAN WHO LOVES MONEY.

Since to say someone loves money implies that this is a bad thing, no man who loves himself should go for a woman who loves money. Using this thread, I will highlight the 5 reasons why it is a bad omen to marry a money-loving woman.

SHE WILL BE INSATIABLE

You can never satisfy a woman who loves money. No matter the amount she has or the amount you give to her, her satisfaction can never be met. Save yourself the trouble.

HER INSATIABILITY WILL MAKE HER CHEAT

There is a cause and effect relationship between a woman who loves money and tendency to cheat. A woman who loves money will follow the highest bidder. It is money that controls such women as they are all about the money.

SHE WILL PUT UNNECESSARY PRESSURE ON HER PARTNER

If you go with a money-loving woman, just know that you will forever live in an unending web of pressure. The desire to meet her demands from time to time is a never ending cycle.

SHE WILL LIMIT YOUR GROWTH

A money loving woman will stunt your progress. Because of your desire to please her desires, you will run into a debt if proper care is not taken. Instead of you to work on things that will bring progress, you will spend all you have on her fruitless cravings.

FINALLY, WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH SHE WILL FLY

And if you are with a money loving woman and things are no more rosy, expect her to fly away into thin air and leave you in your predicament.

DOS AND DON’TS DURING BREASTFEEDING

A healthful breastfeeding diet is essentially the same as a nutritious diet when not breastfeeding. The main difference is that people who are breastfeeding need more calories.

Specific nutrients, such as iron, calcium, potassium, and vitamins A and D, are particularly beneficial when breastfeeding. Eating a wide variety of foods is also essential, as this will expose the baby to different tastes and may result in them being more receptive to solid foods later on.

WHAT TO EAT WHILE BREASTFEEDING

When breastfeeding, aim to include the following foods in each day’s meals:

FRUITS: Grapefruits and oranges are good sources of essential nutrients. Fruits are a rich source of many nutrients. They may also help relieve constipation, which some people experience after giving birth. Aim for about 2 cups of fruit per day, which should include a wide variety of different fruits.

People who are exclusively breastfeeding should aim to eat 3 cups of vegetables a day. Those who are combining breastfeeding with formula-feeding should eat 2.5 cups of vegetables each day.

The recommended vegetables  due to their potassium and vitamin A content includes:

Spinach, cooked greens, such as kale and collards, carrots, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, tomatoes, red sweet peppers

GRAINS

Grains offer vital nutrients, especially whole grains, such as brown rice and whole-wheat bread. People should aim to eat 8 ounces (Oz) a day if they are exclusively breastfeeding, or 6 Oz if they are also formula-feeding.

Some grains, such as quinoa, are also high in protein, which is an essential nutrient to eat when breastfeeding.

Fortified cereals provide added nutrients and are also a good option. It is best to stick to whole-grain cereals that do not contain added sugar.

PROTEIN

When you are breastfeeding, the body requires an extra 25 grams (g) of protein per day and at least 65 g per day in total. Experts recommend including some protein with every meal.

The recommended sources of protein includes: Beans and peas, nuts and seeds, lean beef, pork, and lamb, oysters, crab, and mussels, salmon, herring, Pollock, sardines, and trout, Seafood is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which can support healthy brain development in the baby. Salmon, sardines, and trout are excellent choices because they are high in omega-3s but low in mercury.

FOODS TO AVOID

The list of foods that a person should avoid during pregnancy is long. This may be why some people believe that they must also eat a restrictive diet when breastfeeding.

In fact, there is no list of foods that people who are breastfeeding should avoid altogether. Instead, they should eat food that is healthful and pay attention to cues from their body.

Breast milk comes from nutrients that pass into the blood. Many of the potentially dangerous ingredients that could cross the placenta during pregnancy do not get to the breastfeeding baby.

Some experts warn against so-called gassy foods, such as cruciferous vegetables, but most babies are unaffected by these foods. Likewise, there is no reason to avoid spicy or strong-flavored foods unless the baby reacts negatively to them.

Medical authorities and parenting guides often provide mixed or unclear advice regarding alcohol consumption when breastfeeding.

Alcohol is dangerous during pregnancy because it crosses the placenta, but a breastfeeding baby only gets the amount of alcohol that passes into the blood of the person breastfeeding. In other words, the blood alcohol content of the person breastfeeding is the amount of alcohol that reaches a breastfeeding baby.

With moderate consumption, this amount of alcohol is negligible and unlikely to cause harm.

It's recommended that no more than one drink per day should be taken, where necessary, during breastfeeding. It's also suggested to reduce the risk further by waiting at least 2 hours to breastfeed after drinking alcohol.

UNICEF COUNSELS MOTHERS ON EXCLUSIVE BREAST FEEDING FOR NEW BORN BABIES.

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has advised mothers in Nasarawa State and Nigeria at large to embrace exclusive breast feeding, in the interest of the health of their new born babies.

Ms Chinwe Ezeife, Nutrition Specialist, UNICEF Kaduna Field office, gave the advice on Friday when members of the organisation were on assessment tour to one of its service centres in Keffi.

She said that exclusive breast feeding was good for the health of new born babies, hence the need for mothers to feed their children exclusively for six months of life.

“We are encouraging mothers to embrace exclusive breast feeding. One hour after the birth or delivery, mothers should put their babies to breast feeding.

`She should feed the child exclusively for six months of life.

“After that, the mother will introduce other complementary foods because after six months, only breast milk cannot satisfy the nutrient requirement of the child,” she said.

Ezeife also called for collective efforts to address the challenges of malnutrition in the country.

“My call on the parents, especially the mothers and fathers is for them to join hands to ensure that the child is given exclusive breast feeding.

“We know that mothers own the breast, it is also left for the fathers to do their part, to be supportive in terms of providing the necessary needs required by the mother.

“This is necessary so that the child can be breast feed well,” the nutritionist said.

She restated the commitment of the UNICEF to continue to key into good projects and policies that had direct bearing on the nutritional need of the children in order to improve on their standard of living.

Also speaking, Dr Zakari Adam, the Chief of Field Office, UNICEF Kaduna, said that the tour was for him to see things, with the view of addressing any challenge, if any.

He expressed happiness with the commitment of health workers and other community volunteers of the centres toward tackling the challenges among malnourished children and urged them to sustain the tempo.

According to him, the Ready to Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF), provided by the UNICEF are given to children free of charge.

While thanking UNICEF, Mr Ibrahim Gambo, the Director, Primary Health Care, Keffi Local Government Area said 146 malnourished children had been treated and cured of malnutrition in the area.

According to him, the achievement is possible because of the support received from UNICEF toward addressing the challenges associated with malnourished children.

WHAT EVERY MARRIED WOMAN SHOULD KNOW

I chose to write this thread cos of the growing trend of many ladies leaving their marriages for reasons that will make a sane person puke and it is so funny that these ladies see no big deal in jumping out of their marriage thinking men out there will just jump at them when there are countless numbers of beautiful never married ladies out there.

One big fact i want every married lady to know is this ....

The moment you are married, the seal of spinsterhood is broken and such seal can never be fixed...in other words...if you leave that union, you can never be seen as a never married or single lady so to say but you automatically become a divorcee. And in most cases also, when men approach divorcees for romantic union, they usually have the mindset that it's a favor they are rendering to these ladies which is why many lady divorcees end up single for a very long time and many end up as intimacy gadgets in the hands of randy men.

Why this sermon? it is to tell ladies that they must really think before they go into any marriage because it is better to be never married at 40 than to be a divorcee at 30.Ladies should see marriage as a very special Institute they must guard and should never take for granted at a time guys don't need a wife to enjoy what husbands enjoy as sex is cheap and it is quite easier getting a baby mama rather than going through the stress of fatherhood...it is quite easier for a guy to spend his money on himself rather than spending on a family.

Believe it or not, most guys in marriage of 5 years and above secretly wish that they have the chance to be with a new lady but only few remain disciplined so it is your duty to guard your marriage and take it very seriously.

For those ladies who are quick to say "I will leave my marriage if my hubby cheats on me"...have you ever thought of the fact that when he eventually cheats on you to your face then he really wants you to leave.

Most ladies who say marriage is not necessary usually enjoy hopping from one man to another and i wonder if that is their preferred option. I will advise them to wake up from their delusion and have a rethink. Marriage is more of companionship than sexual intimacy and no matter how beautiful a lady is,in most cases, once she gets into her 40s,the hype of having men flock around her will dwindle and loneliness becomes the order of the day,...only then will she understand that indeed, marriage is an important aspect of life no woman should joke with.

Marriage is more spiritual than physical and nothing gladdens the Devil more than seeing marriages crumble since it is the very institution GOD meticulously established so it is your duty as a lady to guard your marriage and the only logical reason for you to leave your marriage is if your life is seriously threatened...any other reason can be worked out. No matter how many times you change men, there will always be a reason to leave so stop running about and make your marriage work.

There is no good or bad choice of spouse but what we have is your choice and what you make out of it.

NEVER ALLOW ANOTHER LADY PUSH YOU OUT OF YOUR MARRIAGE OR YOU MAY REGRET IT.

This will definitely make no sense to many ladies.

NORMAL DELIVERY AFTER CS, IS IT POSSIBLE?

Q: Is it advisable for a lady who has done Caesarean section before due to a very small pelvic to deliver by herself again?

Ans: When a narrow and small pelvic is the reason for a Caesarean Section, it is usually advised that subsequent deliveries should also be by Caesarean Sections. This is because the narrow pelvis which acts like an obstruction to the passage of the baby will still remain there while subsequent babies delivered by the mother may increase in size.

ARE YOU A NEW PARENT? SEE THE REVISED IMMUNIZATION SCHEDULE

NOTE: IMMUNISATION IS FREE

When babies are born, they inherit specific types of antibodies from their mothers.

These antibodies help them fend off different diseases. The antibodies are also nature's way of protecting babies when they're most vulnerable.

However, starting around six months of age, these antibodies start to diminish, and almost completely disappear by the time your baby is one year old.

In the ideal situation, babies should start to make their own antibodies i.e. the beginning of their immune system, as they increasingly become exposed to the diseases that the maternal antibodies had previously protected them against.

After access to clean water and breastfeeding, immunization is the most highly effective intervention for protecting babies from infectious disease.

Vaccines are either parts of the viruses or bacteria (called antigens) or weakened live viruses. Vaccines are given to babies before the mother's antibodies completely disappear. And most babies get up to 20 vaccines by the time they are one.

Vaccine preventable diseases account for approximately 22% of child deaths in Nigeria, amounting to over 200,000 deaths per year. Some Nigerian parents do not realize the importance of taking their children for vaccinations. These vaccinations are provided for free thanks to many international and local NGOs and the Nigerian government itself. You can enquire from friends and family about the nearest local government health center that provides immunization. There you can find out what time and what day, you should take your child for immunization.

On immunization days, you will be given a card that will help health practitioners and yourself keep track of the vaccines your baby has taken and will take.

As vaccines for other diseases are developed and public health statistics of childhood diseases are analysed, the national programme is changed.

As a new Nigerian parent it can be tough to keep track of all the vaccines your newborn needs. To make things easier for you, we have also outlined the revised immunization schedule below.

NOTE: IMMUNISATION IS FREE

RESULTS OF UNRESOLVED MARITAL CONFLICTS

wedding ring Stigmatization

Indeed, we know that nearly every marriage sometimes can go through the period of delusion, but when it goes beyond the state of hope of survival, such can be replaced by sadness, hurt and despair. “Feeling hopeless is contagious”. It is contagious because it can be transmitted to the ignorant generation yet unborn.

•  Rejection:
It breeds unacceptance by people and the community sometimes. One is seen as an irresponsible person who does not know how to handle marriage. It may lead to ridiculous nickname. E.g. Father of my children or mother of my children.
Unresolved conflicts leading to divorce also cause an individual to be stigmatized and scorned reproachfully.

•  Tormenting: Every unresolved conflict in marriage must present the following torment on its union;

1.  Love and sex denial, food and clothing or shelter denial,

2.  Denial of healthcare, family identity, security and attention.

3.  Also, other basic needs such as education/ skill acquisition may not also be encouraged in most cases.

4.  Physical victimization in form of battering that inflicts heart attack on your spouse,

5.  Denial of help e.g. in some African settings, women are allowed to fend for themselves and their children as if they are widows or slaves

•  Sickness: The result of unresolved conflict in marriage can easily cause the following illnesses:

1.  Hypertension or high blood pressure as a result of worries and frustration about life, this bring about unrest of mind,

2.  Stroke,

3.  Mental disorder or madness.

•  Fear: Phobia comes as a result of the unknown, such as lack of knowledge of what may happen in the nearest hour between the couples. It could be fear of divorce.

•  Children lose morals because of none parental affection: Unresolved con-flicts in marriage bring suffering to the children due to non-parental affection. Therefore, this action could breed; Sickness;

a.  Evil influence by peer pressure;

b.  Stubbornness and drunkenness thus becoming a vagabond;

c.  Drug addition,

d.  Gangsterism and cultism;

e.  Armed robbery and other social vices.

Generational Precedents: If there is no urgent intervention in resolving the conflicts, it may continue from generation to generation.

Divorce: this could likely be the end result

Death: Finally, if in the course of the unresolved conflicts the couple re-fused to separate them-selves in divorce, at the end it could be the man murdering the woman in anger or vice visa.

Oppression and suppression is the devil’s tool to destroy homes, this is why we must not let our anger or emotions take control over us.

Conflict is inevitable as long as two different peo-ple are involved but let’s apply maturity and the fear of God to conquer every agent and tricks of the devil to break our homes. There is no marriage without some hitches.

VAGINAL STEAMING: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Women doing V-steaming or yoni steaming

Vaginal steaming involves exposing the vagina to steam to cleanse it and enhance its health. Other names for the practice include V-steaming or yoni steaming.

The practice has recently made the news due to celebrity reports that tout a variety of benefits, ranging from relieving period discomfort to improving fertility.

However, there is not any scientific evidence to prove that vaginal steaming works. No research studies have tested vaginal steaming or its benefits.

There are also a lot of dangers involved in vaginal steaming, especially burning very delicate tissues.

Learn more about vaginal steaming in this article.

How does vaginal steaming really work?

Vaginal steaming involves exposing the vagina to steam.

Vaginal steaming involves sitting over a steaming pot of water that often contains added herbs. Possible herbs may include basil, mugwort, rosemary, and wormwood.

People who practice vaginal steaming believe the herbs can penetrate vaginal tissues and offer a variety of benefits.

Some people try vaginal steaming at home, but it is also available at spas. The treatment typically lasts between 20 and 45 minutes.

POTENTIAL BENEFITS:

Some people believe vaginal steaming offers many health benefits and have called the practice a "facial" for the vagina.

Some of the reported benefits of vaginal steaming include:

1. Reducing menstrual symptoms, such as bloating, cramps, exhaustion, and heavy bleeding

2. Boosting fertility

3. Promoting healing after childbirth

4. Reducing stress

5. Treating hemorrhoid

6. Increasing energy and reducing fatigue

7. Treating headaches etc

Currently, there are no scientific studies that prove these purported benefits. However, some people say it works by enhancing blood flow to the vaginal tissues, which can promote healing.

WHAT ARE THE HEALTH AND SAFETY CONCERNS?

1.  The primary safety concern is that the steam could burn the sensitive vaginal tissues if it is too hot.

2.   Adding extra moist heat to the vagina and exposing the vagina to certain additives within the steam could also increase a woman's risk for yeast or bacterial infections.

3.   If the vaginal steaming equipment is not kept clean, a person could also be at risk for infections and other side effects. Therefore, it is essential to clean all equipment thoroughly before using it.

4.   If a person goes to a spa for a vaginal steaming, they should ask the spa staff how they clean their equipment and what steps they take to reduce infection risk.

5.   Vaginal steaming can be dangerous if a woman is pregnant. This is because the vaginal steam could affect the growing fetus.

6.   It is generally recommended by health professionals that pregnant women avoid using hot tubs, saunas, and heating pads around the pelvis for the same reason.

7.  If a person does try vaginal steaming, it is essential to avoid getting too close to the steam or using water that is too hot.

If the steam feels uncomfortable or as if it is getting too hot, a person should move away from the steam.

Women who are trying to restore pH balance to their vagina due to frequent infections should see their doctor before they try vaginal steaming.

There are prescription treatments available to help restore pH balances where necessary. These are more likely to be effective than vaginal steaming.

CONCLUSION :
The vagina is a self-cleaning organ that regularly maintains pH balance. Additional interventions, such as vaginal steaming or douching, are not necessary to maintain vaginal health.

Keeping the vagina clean, dry, and free of perfumes is the best way to keep the vagina healthy. Therefore, most people should not try vaginal steaming.

If they do try it, it is best to exercise extreme caution to reduce the risk of burns and infections.

NIGERIA MOVES TO IMPROVE MATERNAL, CHILD SURVIVAL RATE

Worried by the increasing number of maternal and newborn deaths in Nigeria and indeed Africa, the Federal government has stressed the need to scale-up the implementation of four percent chlorhexidine gel intervention, a drug used to prevent maternal and neonatal mortality across the sub-region

Speaking at a regional learning workshop organized by the Federal Ministry of Health in collaboration with PATH and USAID yesterday in Abuja

Permanent Secretary at the Ministry, Abdullahi Mashi, said the high rate of neo-natal mortality coupled with the use of harmful traditional substances such as cow dung, engine oil, tooth paste for cord care led the country to embrace the intervention in order change the newborn deaths narrative in Nigeria.

The workshop which was attended by nine Franco-phone countries was aimed at improving chlorhexidine intervention across the ECOWAS sub-region.

He noted that though government through integrated approach and collaborative public-private partnerships has recorded success in the use of the drug, “the issue of poor data, low uptake of 4 per cent chlorhexidine, weak maternal newborn and child health (MNCH) are challenges confronting CHX implementation”.

MY WIFE AND HER FAMILY ARE DRIVING ME CRAZY

My wife and her family members are driving me crazy. Their involvement in my home is becoming embarrassing. I may have to give my wife the red card asap. Her family poke noses into all my affairs. How I spent my money, who I give my money to, who I visit, and so on. All they want is to continue to expend money on them and live my life for them. I got their daughter a job, her salary isn't enough for them, how can I be taking care of able bodied men who have refused to work with their certificates, looking for jobs with good pays before they'll work, their pensioner father is not also helping matters, very difficult to please. I have made it known to my wife that our marriage contract did not include pleasing her family members but she won't listen then I worked my transfer from Lagos to Abuja, yet they're on my neck. My wife's younger brother is presently in Abuja without any clear cut mission other than to come and monitor my affairs. He called me around 7pm yesterday to tell me he's in Utako and that I should come and pick him from pack, I told him I didn't invite him to Abuja so why should I pick him up? I asked him if he didn't have a mission before coming and why he should get to Abuja before notifying me that he's coming to my place. I shunned him and switched off my phone. I switched on the phone now only to read 3 abusive text messages from my wife and one from her father threatening that if anything happens to his son, I'll be held responsible. My people, can you see my life? My pastor have been trying to broker peace between us before I left for Abuja to no avail, what I intended to do is to settle down here and get her relocated so that if she's a bit far from her family, things will work out. I'll instruct a lawyer to file divorce papers tomorrow, I can no longer take it.

WHAT IS THE APOSTLES’ CREED?

The Apostles’ Creed, though not written by the apostles, is the oldest creed of the Christian church and is the basis for others that followed. Its most used form is:

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth,
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, Born of the Virgin Mary,
Suffered under Pontius Pilate,
Was crucified, dead, and buried.
He descended into hell;
The third day He rose again from the dead;
He ascended into heaven,
And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost;
The Holy catholic Church,
The Communion of Saints;
The Forgiveness of sins;
The Resurrection of the body,
And the Life everlasting. Amen.

In its oldest form, the Apostles’ Creed goes back to at least 140 A.D.

Many of the early church leaders summed up their beliefs as they had an opportunity to stand for their faith—see, for example, 1 Timothy 6:12.

These statements developed into a more standard form to express one’s confession of faith at the time of baptism.

It is not Scripture, but it is a simple list of the great doctrines of the faith.

The word “catholic” means “relating to the church universal” and was the word used in the original version of the Creed.

It does not mean the Roman Catholic Church, but the church, the body of Christ, as a universal fellowship.

The phrase, “He descended into hell,” was not part of the creed in its earliest form.

REASON WHY SOME WOMEN ARE OPTING FOR CAESAREAN SECTION (C-section)

FOR women with a complicated pregnancy, a caesarean section (C-section) may be necessary for the health of the mother, child, or both.

However, for a variety of reasons, some women choose to have their babies by a ‘planned’ or ‘intended’ caesarean section even when there is no medical need to do so.

Take Adenike Mohammed, for example, when she was expecting her first child three years ago, she made the decision to have a caesarean section because she wanted to avoid the agonising pains that come with natural birth.

“Pregnancy itself was hard and I couldn’t bring myself to endure more suffering during delivery. So, I chose to have my baby through a C-section because medical science had improved greatly. Before the naming ceremony on the seventh day, I would have been discharged from the hospital,” she says.

Mrs Toke Hammed’s request for a C-section was for cosmetic reasons. Aside from her fear of a long labour period, she wanted C-section so that her doctor, after bringing out the baby, can trim all the fat in her stomach to ensure that it is flat.

For Mrs Ekaete David, who was preparing to have her fourth baby, she accepted to have CS based on health grounds; for her safety and that of her unborn baby. She was told that her baby was too big.

“Complications are higher as the number of pregnancy increases. In my case, it was my fourth pregnancy and the doctor kept telling me my baby was too big. I became afraid and asked if I could do CS. It is better rather than suffering and eventually going through CS,” she said.

Today, more and more women are opting for C-section deliveries, and though the reasons vary from one woman to another as many have expressed fear of unbearable labour pains, birth canal getting out of shape, as well as other social and cosmetic reasons.

A number of theories exist as to why a preference for C-sections is on the increase globally. One is that pregnant women are getting older and heavier, and it is these older and heavier women that are undergoing more C-sections.

The latest figures (2016) show that 25 per cent of births in Western Europe were by caesarean delivery; in North America, it was 32 per cent, and in South America 41 per cent.

A caesarean section is often necessary when a normal delivery would put the life of the baby or mother at risk and this may include obstructed labour, twin pregnancy and high blood pressure. Others are breech birth or problems with the placenta or umbilical cord.

Dr Sesan Oluwasola, a consultant Obstetrics and Gynaecologist, University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, Oyo State, said aversion for caesarean delivery is still a major issue.

He added “society has made people believe that CS is bad, and so most of our women still hold on to that belief. But it is very safe; it is better than it was 20 years ago due to advancement in medical practice.

“The time you do the operation, the anaesthetic competency that we have now and the type of operation that you do now, has made it quite safer than it used to be. For example, we do not put people to sleep 90 per cent of the time anymore.

“Because the woman is awake, her response after the surgery is better, she losses less blood and then she goes home on time. Again because of the type of cut you make on the skin and on the womb, you are not going to wait until the womb is healed before she goes home.

“In fact, the way you close the womb, the woman does not have to come back to remove the sutures after seven days. All those had made it better and also the improvement in antibiotics.

“The antibiotics we have now are very strong unlike the olden days penicillin and so on.  So, the infection that will make the woman stay long in the hospital is being taken care of. She is up and doing immediately. Also, we have strong painkillers such that if the woman does CS today, in some places, six hours later, she can begin to eat.”

Dr Oluwasola, however, said that stigma for CS was partly due to cultural beliefs on the procedure, adding “even at many antenatal clinics, pregnant women are against having their babies through CS. But the midwives who lead the song also need to let them know that there are occasions that warrant it. These include when the baby is too big, twin pregnancy and high blood pressure.

“They should look at the bigger picture; if you force yourself to deliver the baby, the baby may die and you may end up with VVF. Now some people because of the complications of VVF, are not able to get pregnant again. So, it is a whole lot of issues, but CS is now better than it was 20 years ago.”

Contrary to many people’s beliefs, Dr Oluwasola assured that babies from CS do not have any abnormality what so ever.

He declared: “That struggle through the birth canal does not build immunity; the passage through the birth canal only squeezes the fluid that is in the baby’s lungs out and the baby coming out of the stress begins to yell. It does not do any other thing.”

Although there are major and minor reasons why a woman may be advised to have her baby through CS, he declared that women after the first CS stand a risk of having their next baby through CS.

“She already has a cut and when she is going to have the next baby, the chances of doing another baby by CS is 50:50. And if she has done CS two times, then the next delivery will also be by CS.”

For example, after a previous CS or as a result of a possibly recurrent issue, like being short or having a small pelvic size, it is not advisable to deliver vaginally.

Irrespective of the fact that CS is good, it doesn’t come without risks because anything surgery could have complications. Every surgery has its own complications.

Also, a review, published in PLOS Medicine, looked on the long-term health benefits and risks associated with having a caesarean delivery on the health of both the mother and the child compared with a vaginal one.

The study, conducted by the University of Edinburgh, is based on an analysis of the combined data (a “meta-analysis”) of one large randomised controlled trial and 79 observational studies, all from wealthy countries. In total, the number of participants included in the studies was almost 30 million.

Compared with vaginal delivery, there is a decreased risk of urinary incontinence and vaginal prolapsed with a caesarean delivery. And pregnancy after caesarean delivery was associated with increased risk of miscarriage and stillbirth, as well as several subsequent pregnancy risks such as placenta previa and uterine rupture, but not of neonatal death.

Women who had a C-section were 17 per cent more likely to have a miscarriage if they decided to become pregnant after the caesarean and 27 percent more likely to experience a stillbirth.

The risk of placenta previa, on the other hand — a condition in which the placenta grows in the wrong part of the womb — was 74 per cent higher for mothers who had a C-section, and the risk was even higher for placenta accreta or placental abruption.

There is an increased risk of asthma (21% increased risk) and the risk of obesity (59%) in children up to the age of five, compared with children born by vaginal delivery.

The findings are significant, given that more and more women are opting for a caesarean delivery instead of a vaginal one – a lot of the time without having been medically advised to do so.

HOW TO COPE WITH AN ADDICTION (ALCOHOL /DRUG): THE DO’S AND DON’TS

An addict’s life is very complex and fragile all at the same time. As a family member or friend, you want to do everything within your power to aid in their recovery. You may even go to such extents as to forcefully and passionately push to see that they seek treatment, go to therapy, and stay clean.

Yet despite your best efforts, the very thing you are doing to help, may be doing more harm to that addict’s complex and fragile world. Here are a few pointers as to how to cope with an addict in your life, without inflicting any more unintentional harm driving them further into their addiction.

An alcohol or drug abuser may try to coerce you into their addiction by offering you to drink or do drugs with them. You may feel this could help you level with them, understand their addiction, or even repair their loneliness. However, the addiction is much deeper than superficial ailments. It is a disease within the mind. Therefore, do maintain your integrity when with an addict. Be an example of sobriety for them.

With that being said, don’t allow them to convince you that you are wrong for seeing their addiction as a problem. Also, don’t associate their addiction as a personal vendetta against you. Saying “you would quit if you loved me” is inconsequential to the addict as their addiction for drugs or alcohol overcomes even their deepest love for family.

Do accept their submittal to drugs and alcohol. Understand that the addiction is beyond their logical control. It is an overwhelming burden to them. Acceptance and not denial of this state will allow you to realistically find solutions to their problem.

Any standard /recommended treatment programs should be at a minimum of three months to support a more successful recovery. Don’t enroll the abuser in a 30-day program. Addiction is built up from years of life-damaging events and suppressed emotions that will take time to unravel and deconstruct.

Do support and fully insist that rehab is the only option acceptable for their recovery. Sweeping statements of, “one last time” or “I’ll wean myself off” are not acceptable. They will never be capable of doing such things because addiction is a disease, not a choice. Showing your support for rehab will lead to a more successful recovery as they can be assured that they have not failed and have become a worthless person if you are standing with them.

However, don’t assume the addict in your life will be jumping at the opportunity to enroll in the program at the first mention of rehab. Intervention, whether personal or professional, may be necessary. Any family or friends who have been providing a crutch for the addict to get along needs to be cut off or must clearly understand that they too must also support and recommend rehab.

Do provide your utmost love, guidance, and support, at every stage of the addict’s recovery. Drugs and alcohol are their way to suppress guilt and shame. Showing your care and love throughout each step of their addiction will help make their recovery more successful.

STRANGE DISEASE PARALYSES 6 FAMILY MEMBERS IN NASARAWA STATE

Six members of a family in Gitata, Nasarawa State have been paralysed by a strange disease.

The six are the children of the late Danladi Bawa and usually suffer the affliction after turning 18 years, the eldest male in the family, Mr Danlami Danladi, said.

Danladi revealed in the family compound in Gitata on Saturday that their father died in 1990, while their mother died in 2017 but not from the disease.

“My name is Danlami Danladi, I am 38 years old; as you can see, our parents are late.

“My father died in 1990 after a brief illness and our mother died in 2017 from malaria and typhoid attack.

“Our parents did not die of this disease. They gave birth to eight of us and six of us have been paralysed by a mysterious ailment.

“When we grow up and reach the age of 18, we find ourselves paralysed. We don’t know what happens and this kind of disease.

“When my father died in 1990, it was our mother that usually provided us with our needs. Her death affected us more as we find it difficult to eat and take care of our medical treatment.

“I am the second born of our parents and I was paralysed in 2006. And let me tell you what disturbs us is that, six of us were paralysed when we were above the age of 18.

“It was after we grew up and we don’t know what is happening to our family.

“All of us went to Federal Medical Centre, Keffi and Godiya Clinic, Jabba Local Government Area of Kaduna State, after various tests, they told us that nothing was discovered.

“We pray that we will be healed of this mysterious disease one day,” he said.

Danladi appealed to the federal and state governments as well as well-meaning Nigerians to come to their assistance through the provision of foodstuffs as well as medical needs.

He said that because of their conditions they could not fend for themselves.

“I was repairing handsets before but now I cannot do the job because I have been paralysed and I pray that God will heal me and my brothers and sisters from this kind of mysterious disease,” he added.

Other members of the family are Asabe, married and has five children, Pius, Maikasuwa, Danjuma and Cecelia, all paralysed.

Their siblings, Hanatu and Joshua are the ones free of the disease, being the youngest members of the family.

Mr Shuaibu Ahmadu, a resident and hunter in the area, said the people were shocked by the affliction and prayed God to heal them.

“This disease will only paralyse them when they grow up, we wonder why.

“We pray God to heal them and protect the remaining two children of the family from the disease,” Ahmadu said.

LISTERIOSIS OUTBREAK: WHO WARNS NIGERIA, 15 OTHER AFRICAN COUNTRIES

Listeriosis

The World Health Organisation (WHO) on Wednesday warned Nigeria and 15 other African countries of a listeriosis outbreak that started in South Africa in 2017, confirming its support for their preparedness and response to the disease.

The other African countries are Angola, Botswana, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Listeriosis is a bacterial infection most commonly caused by Listeria monocytogenes.

It can cause severe illness, including severe sepsis, meningitis, or encephalitis, sometimes resulting in lifelong harm and even death.

Listeria is ubiquitous and is primarily transmitted via the oral route after ingestion of contaminated food products

According to WHO numbers, nearly 200 South Africans have died since January 2017 as a result of contaminated ready-to-eat meat products that are widely consumed in the country and may also have been exported to two West African countries and 14 members of the South African Development Community.

South African health authorities recently declared the source of the outbreak as a factory in Polokwane, in the country’s northeast.

This prompted a national and international recall of the food products.

However, in light of the potentially long incubation period of listeriosis and the challenges relating to large scale nationwide recall processes, further cases are likely to occur.

Whole genome sequencing of isolated strains of the Listeria bacteria was used to make the link between the contaminated products, the producing company and strains of Listeria isolated from the patients.

The WHO is currently supporting further genome sequencing to determine which cases are linked to this on-going outbreak.

In March, South Africa hosted a meeting of SADC health ministers to address regional preparedness and response to listeriosis.

The ministers committed to regional collaboration, exchanging information and strengthening national food safety systems in line with international standards.

The WHO, however, does not currently recommend any trade related measures in relation to the current outbreak of listeriosis in South Africa, other than the recall of products identified as sources of infection.

The UN health agency is working with the 16 priority countries to improve their ability to prepare for, detect and respond to potential outbreaks.

Immediate steps include increasing awareness on listeriosis, enhancing active surveillance and laboratory diagnosis, ensuring readiness of Rapid Response Teams, and strengthening coordination and contingency planning. Experts have been deployed to South Africa, Lesotho and Swaziland to support these efforts.

“This outbreak is a wake-up call for countries in the region to strengthen their national food safety and disease surveillance systems,” said Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, WHO regional director for Africa.

LAGOS STATE GOVT CALLS FOR INVOLVEMENT OF COMMUNITY LEADERS IN FAMILY PLANNING ADVOCACY

The Lagos State Government on Thursday says the involvement of grassroots leaders in the uptake of Family Planning (FP) to make it more effective in the state.

The state Commissioner for Health, Dr Jide Idris, made the assertion held on Thursday at the Isolo Local Council Development Area (LCDA) Town Hall Meeting on Family Planning in Lagos.

The meeting was facilitated by the Nigerian Urban Reproductive Health Initiative (NURHI), a Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation funded project.

Idris, represented by Dr Saidat Okaga, the State Reproductive Health Coordinator, said: “Provision of free Family Planning services to women and men of child bearing age in Lagos is a paramount agenda of the state government.

“The reason is not far-fetched because different statistics and surveys conducted in the state show that Family Planning programme, when effectively done, can lead to a reduction of maternal deaths by 34 per cent.

“The participation of the community members, who are the direct recipients of the various interventions, is key.

“This informed the establishment of Town Hall meetings at the grassroots to allow us understand the need to adequately plan for a right family size.

“So, our community leaders are majorly recognised as being key in the provision of the right information to our community people on FP services in order to remove barriers and misconceptions to usage.’’

Idris stressed the need for the local government chairmen to collaborate with the state Ministry of Health in the provision of family planning consumables for all the PHCs under the LGAs and LCDAs.

“These consumables are necessary to enable the commodities to be used and must therefore be available free of charge just as the commodities are equally being provided free by the government.

“This way, we can make family planning services attractive to our teeming population.

“This will also go a long way in encouraging our women to patronise our health facility thereby increasing FP uptake.

“So, our community leaders are majorly recognised as being key in the provision of the right information to our community people on FP services in order to remove barriers and misconceptions to usage.

“I implore you all to become advocates and champions of FP and help in driving the information on the need for its usage,’’ he said.

The commissioner said that a well-spaced family would ensure that women looked younger and were better able to contribute to the economic activities in the homes.

“The fathers are able to provide adequately for the family size they can afford to take care of from their earnings.

“As a result, the society will indirectly be rid of unruly miscreants who are homeless from lack of family support and care,’’ Idris said.

In his remarks, Mr Shamsudeen Olaleye, the Chairman, Isolo LCDA, said: “We are committed to doing everything possible to reduce maternal and child mortality, if not completely remove it from our health system.

“We have a budget for FP and once there is a budget that signifies statement of will.

“The Isolo LCDA will do its best to contribute its quota to ensuring that family planning becomes a lifestyle to reduce discomforts and casualties that result from not planning a family,’’ Olaleye added..

IRON (fe) DEFICIENCY IN CHILDREN RESOLVED BY BIOFORTIFIED PEARL MILLET

Anemia affects more than 1.6 billion people worldwide, and iron deficiency is the leading cause of the condition. Pearl millet bred with 2 to 4 times more iron than conventional varieties could offer a novel solution, according to a Cornell-led study testing the new grain’s efficacy.

Published recently in theJournal of Nutrition, the study describes how the iron biofortified pearl millet resolved iron deficiency in a group of school-aged children in India within four to six months, compared to a control group fed conventional pearl millet over the same time period. The iron-rich grain used in the study was developed by the HarvestPlus program, in partnership with the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) in India.

For the past year, companies have been selling and distributing seeds of the new high-iron pearl millet crossed with local varieties to western Indian farmers. In India, pearl millet is typically ground into flour to make bhakri, a staple flat bread.

The study tested the efficacy of the bio-fortified pearl millet on iron status in children, and examined how long the increased iron took to accumulate in the body.

“We estimated it would take somewhere between four and six months,” said Jere Haas, professor emeritus of maternal and child nutrition in the Division of Nutritional Sciences, the paper’s senior author. Julia Finkelstein, assistant professor of epidemiology and nutrition and the Follett Sesquicentennial Faculty Fellow in the Division of Nutritional Sciences, is the paper’s first author.

“After four months we could see a significant difference in accumulated body iron for the high iron bio-fortified pearl millet group versus the control group,” Haas said.

The randomized controlled feeding trial – no one knew which participants were fed high-iron pearl millet flat bread and which were fed conventional pearl millet bread – was conducted in 246 low-income, boarding-school children between 12 and 16 years old in Maharashtra, India.

Conventional pearl millet contains 21 parts per million (ppm) of iron, while the new iron-rich variety has 83 ppm – almost four times more. It also contains more zinc. In addition, the new crops have higher yields and are disease and drought tolerant.

“ICRISAT was able to substantially increase iron content for pearl millet, but there is a limit” to how much iron the plant can store, Haas said. “This is less than one sees in diet supplements, which is why it takes longer to see an effect.”

Haas conducted a previous trial to test efficacy of rice bio-fortified with iron. Rice has a low iron content to start with, and studies revealed that people needed to consume a significant amount, about 4 to 5 cups of cooked rice, over nine months to achieve small effects, Haas said.

At the start of the pearl millet study, 41 percent of the children were iron deficient, and 28 percent were anemic. Among children who were iron deficient, those who ate the high-iron pearl millet bread were more than one and a half times more likely to have normal iron levels after six months, compared to children in the control group who ate conventional pearl millet bread.

The researchers noted that it was much harder to discern the impact of bio-fortified millet on anemia, since many factors can play a role in anemia. Also, the new millet can replenish low body iron in apparently healthy people, since excess dietary iron is well regulated in the body.

Future studies will examine the effects of introducing such seeds across a population, to see how widely the iron-rich grain integrates into the food system, and what effect it has on overall iron deficiency over many years.

The study was funded by HarvestPlus.

4.  If there is a quarrel with the husband and then a visitor comes, the wife should smile as if nothing happened

5. Anytime the wife thinks she is right in a matter, she should refer herself to Article number 1

6.   A good wife must go to bed in her nightdress with no panties or bra, (except during your monthly flow, which he must know about) to allow the husband access to her at any time he feels like (NOTE: *All women should note that this is a man's greatest desire in marriage* - especially if he loves the woman)

7. A woman MUST NEVER refuse her husband's romance expect on the grounds of health and prayers. *Even in such cases she must POLITELY and LOVINGLY explain to him*

13. The wife never goes to sit down in her husband's office unless in an urgent case or an emergency. A good husband too will not come and sit in your office.

14. A good wife does not embark on any kind of expenses without consulting the husband *even if it is your own money*. A good husband too will not control your money.

22. NEVER ENTERTAIN *ANY MALE GUEST* WITHOUT HIS KNOWLEDGE. *Not even his own blood brother* He may not talk or complain about some, but be sure he has counted it against you.

23. The wife *never* goes out anywhere without permission from her husband

*NB:*    My dear fellow woman, I want you to know that *THE POWER OF A GOOD WIFE IS IN HER WEAKNESS*. Please,  as stupid as this may sound to you, use it and watch your husband become your lover once again.  This is my secret recipe for a happy marriage and full control of my home. *I did all the above and I was the one running the home; NOT MY HUSBAND!* His love and respect for me was second to none. And I know that's why God has also granted us long life to enjoy each other the more.

NIGERIAN HOSPITALS NOW TO TREAT GUNSHOT WOUNDS WITHOUT POLICE REPORT - SEN. ITA ENANG

Physicians and medical workers in Nigerian Hospitals across the country can now treat gun shot wounds without first requesting for a police report before commencing treatment on any victim.

This was made known by Senator Ita Enang, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate). He made this known to State House correspondents in Abuja on Friday while stating that President Muhammadu Buhari signed the Compulsory Treatment and Care for Victims of Gunshot Act, 2017 into law alongside other five bills.

The five other bills are

The Niger Delta Development Commission (Establishment) Amendment Act, 2017;

The Anti-Torture Act 2017;

The Federal Capital Appropriation Act;

The Federal Capital Territory Water Board (Establishment) Act 2017;

and the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (Establishment) Act 2017.

Senator Enang stated that the Gunshot Act specifically stipulates that a person with gunshot shall be received for immediate and adequate treatment by any hospital in Nigeria with or without initial monetary deposit. A person with gunshot wound shall not be subjected to inhuman and degrading treatment or torture by any person or authority, including the police and other security agencies,” he explained.

On Niger Delta Development Commission (Establishment) Amendment Act, 2017, Enang said the NDDC Act also included the gas producing and gas processing companies in the list of agencies that were contributing to the Niger Delta Development Commission, in addition to oil companies to increase funding of the commission for effective discharge of its duties.
He added that “previously, the NDDC Act excluded gas companies. The Act makes it explicit that gas companies have to be included. “This is to diversify sources of funding for the NDDC for the economic wellbeing of the region.’’

On the Anti-Torture Act, he said it makes comprehensive provisions for penalising acts of torture and other cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment or punishment, and prescribes penalties for the commission of such acts.

On the Federal Capital Appropriation Act, the president’s aide explained that the Act authourised the Federal Capital Territory Administration to legally and legitimately provide funds out of its Statutory Revenue Fund for recurrent and capital expenditure.

On the Federal Capital Territory Water Board Establishment Act, he noted that the act was charged with the responsibility of providing safe, adequate and affordable water to FCT residents.

The National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (Establishment) Act, 2017, he said is to provide national direction in cancer research, control and treatment; guide scientific improvements to cancer prevention, treatment and care, coordinate and liaise between the wide range of groups and health care providers with an interest in cancer.

“The six Acts have come into effect as laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.’’

THE FAMILY

Definition of the Family
The family is the most basic unit of any human social organization, comprising of the father, mother and their biological and /or adopted children. Thus, communities are composed of aggregates of families; while several communities form the states and the various states together from the nation. Thus the health and wellbeing of the nation is dependent on the health status of families.

PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED AMONG FAMILIES

The problems can grouped into:
i. Genetic Problems
ii. Environmental problems
iii. Combination of both Genetic and environmental problems.

Genetic problems: Some of the genetic problems are:
Hemoglobin SS
Down’s Syndrome
G6PD deficiency
Hemophilia
Achrondroplasia

Environmental Problems These are problems emanating from man’s total environment. The total environment can be sub grouped as follows
1. Physical environment
2. Biological environment
3. Chemical environment
4. Socio-cultural environment
5. Political environment
6. Economic environment
7. Psychological environment
8. Spiritual/religious environment

Problems may ensue from any of the above, problem may also cut a complex picture of intertwined components of the total environment. Analysis of problems as may be due to each component will make it easy to appreciate the whole picture.

Physical Environment
Land Topography and Texture
- Slope encourage erosions and washing of top soil.
- Rocky environment reduces space for farming and development
- Very flat topography leads to poor drainage system and encourage flooding

Climate
- In thick forest – land preparation for farming and development is costlier
- In Savannah forest – fire outbreak is easy especially during dry season implies destruction of crops in the farm.

Seasons
In dry season there is little rain. This leads to
- Dryness and this implies fire accidents
- Drought – famine – malnutrition – susceptibility to diseases
These can serve as ventricles and vectors of disease causing organisms

Chemical Environment
Discovery of oil in Nigeria is beneficial. It is however not without its problems like:
Oil spillage – land pollution
- Compromised land fertility and crops
- Low/no income to farmers
- Poverty
- Hunger
- Malnutrition
- Susceptibility to diseases
- Premature deaths
- Contamination of water – disease – death

Based on oil discovery, industries sprang up that lead to environmental pollution by toxic agents
- Genetic mutations
- Cancer e.g Koko village episode

Socio/Cultural Environment
There are good and bad socio/cultural practices. The bad ones lead to family and reproductive health problems:
- Gender bias
- Early marriage (Female)
This deprive females of opportunity to be educated and to be good and efficient future mothers. Those culminate in increased maternal and child morbidity and mortality.
- Female genital mutilation leads to complications like:
- Hemorrhage, severe pains
- Infections
- Low birth weight
- Increased infant morbidity and mortality

Malnutrition causes anaemia. This leads to increased morbidity and mortality especially maternal and child morbidity and mortality. In Raining Season: too much rain can cause flooding this can lead to:
- Destruction of houses and properties
- Submerged farm lands
- Family displacement] environmental pollution
- Disease susceptibility

 Biological Environment
This is divisible to:
- Micro organisms
- Macro organisms
There are different types of microorganisms and the diseases they cause:
- Bacteria: cause disease like: diarrhea, vomiting, typhoid, cholera, tuberculosis, amoebiasis, pneumonias, meningitis, dipheria whooping cough,
- Viruses – cause diseases like: poliomyelitis, Hepatitis, measles, Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome, Rubella, plumps, Rabies, yellow fever, Rubella virus leads to genetic mutation of fetus.
- Parasites: causes – malaria, taemiasis, hydatid disease, leistimaniasis, ascariasis, hookworm infection, dracunculiasis etc.
- Macro organism is divisible to:
- Plants
- Animals
- Human
- HIV/AIDS spread – through contaminated instruments. Dislocation and fractures – because of how the child is held down.
- Acute urinary retention
- Renal problems
- Pelvic infections
-  Infertility
- Haemametria
- Keloid formation
- Obstructed labour
- Bad obstetric history, post partum heamorrhage
- Sexual dissatisfaction
- Sexual promiscuity
- Disease susceptibility
- Marital instability

Political Environment
- Products of broken homes
- Juvenile delinquency
- Delinquents shootings their ways to power
- Maladministration
- Political instability
- Wars and disasters
- Failure to execute health plans
- Health programmes dies prematurely
- No community of health programmes
- No acceptable, accessible, affordable health care system
- Affects family, community and Reproductive health adversely.

 Psychological Environment
Emotional stability is crucial to growth in all ramifications. All the aforementioned problems lead to environmental and social stress that predispose susceptible people to emotional instability and even psychiatric problems. When the problems persists even the non-susceptible groups are likely to reach their elastic limits. Many of the psychiatric cases are missed by less knowledgeable health workers in the community. Wrong management is applied until they eventually stumble on professionals in secondary or tertiary health institutions. Psychiatric problems in primary health care has been under estimated.

Religious Environment
About seventy five percent (75%) of illness in Africa in general and in Nigeria in particular are psychosomatic majority of people out of wrong zeal, overzealous attitude and poverty take refuge in religious institutions wrongly when there are health problems. Fanatics reject beneficial health programmes on the basis of religious believes. Recently, Kano rejected National Immunization Day programme (NIDs).

Economic Environment
Taking cognizance of the factors mentioned above and others that could be secondary to them, the individual economic status is bound to be depressed, hence the depression of family, community, state and national economy. Money does everything. Poverty is one of the trials that trigger off chains of health problems into a vicious cycle.
