GOVERNMENT TAKES ACTION AFTER PREGNANT WOMAN WAS BEATEN BY NURSE IN CALABAR (PHOTO)

Some hospital staff have been suspended over alleged gross misconduct and negligence towards a patient in Calabar, Cross River state. It was gathered that on Friday evening, a pregnant woman in labor was brought to PHC Mayne Avenue.

Rather than hospital workers helping her into the labor room, they demanded for N20,000 for surgery and allegedly pushed the woman out of the facility when she didn't pay despite her pain. It was alleged that a trained nurse named Eme Bassey used mop stick to beat the woman, claiming that she bit her hand with her teeth..

The pregnant woman went to the grass in front of the facility where she struggled on her own to deliver her baby and was aided by a member of the community and other passer by. When finally the woman put to birth, the youths in the community went into the health facility to move the said nurse out to ensure she assisted the woman. It was then she reluctantly came out to help the woman deliver her placenta and finally let her into the facility.

The Director General of Cross River State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Dr Betta Edu when called, arrived the facility in complete shock that women could give such treatment to a fellow woman.

The DG, with immediate effect suspended all the staff involved and the PHC coordinator who supervises then. All staff involved are to face disciplinary committee and might face tougher sanctions including dismissal if the board so decides.

UNDERSTANDING FAMILY PLANNING AND ITS SIGNIFICANCE

Family planning is one of the 10 great public health achievements of the 20th century.

The availability of family planning services allows individuals to achieve desired birth spacing and family size, and contributes to improved health outcomes for infants, children, women, and families.

Family planning services include:

• Contraceptive services

• Pregnancy testing and counseling

• Pregnancy–achieving services including preconception health services

• Basic infertility services

• Sexually transmitted disease services

• Broader reproductive health services, including patient education and counseling

• Breast and pelvic examinations

• Breast and cervical cancer screening

• Sexually transmitted infection (STI) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) prevention education, counseling, testing, and referral

Abstinence from sexual activity is the only 100% effective way to avoid unintended pregnancy. For individuals who are sexually active, correct and consistent contraceptive use is highly effective at preventing unintended pregnancy. The most effective methods to prevent unintended pregnancy include long-acting reversible contraceptives such as intrauterine devices (IUDs) and contraceptive implants, followed by other hormonal contraceptives including oral contraceptives (pills), the patch, the ring, and the Depo-Provera shot (DMPA). Condoms protect against both unintended pregnancy and STIs, and their use should be encouraged. Both men and women should be counseled about using condoms at every act of sexual intercourse when not in a long-term, mutually monogamous sexual relationship.

IMPORTANCE OF FAMILY PLANNING

For many women, a family planning clinic is their entry point into the health care system and one they consider their usual source of care.

In 2015, publicly funded family planning services helped prevent 1.9 million unintended pregnancies, including 440,000 teen pregnancies.

Unintended pregnancies include pregnancies that are reported by women as being mistimed or unwanted. Almost half (45%) of the 6.1 million annual pregnancies are unintended.

Unintended pregnancies are associated with many negative health and economic consequences.

For women, negative outcomes associated with unintended pregnancy can include:

• Delays in initiating prenatal care

• Reduced likelihood of breastfeeding

• Increased risk of maternal depression

• Increased risk of physical violence during pregnancy.

Births resulting from unintended pregnancies (in most cases) can have negative consequences including birth defects and low birth weight.

Children from unintended pregnancies are more likely to experience poor mental and physical health during childhood, and have lower educational attainment and more behavioral issues in their teen years.

The negative consequences associated with unintended pregnancies are greater for teen parents and their children.

Eighty-two percent of pregnancies to mothers ages 15 to 19 are unintended.

Twenty percent of all unintended pregnancies occur among teens.

Similarly, early fatherhood is associated with lower educational attainment and lower income.

Moreover, children of teen parents are more likely to have lower cognitive attainment and exhibit more behavior problems.

Sons of teen mothers are more likely to be incarcerated, and daughters are more likely to become adolescent mothers.

Unintended pregnancies occur among women of all incomes, educational levels, and ages. However, there are disparities in unintended pregnancy rates.

The rates of unintended pregnancy are highest among the following groups:

• Women ages 18 to 24

• Women who were cohabiting

• Women whose income is below the poverty line

• Women with less than a high school diploma

• Black or Hispanic women

In addition, men are less likely to have access to and receive family planning services than women.

Barriers to people’s use of family planning services include:

• Cost of services

• Limited access to publicly funded services

• Limited access to insurance coverage

• Family planning clinic locations and hours that are not convenient for clients

• Lack of awareness of family planning services among hard-to-reach populations

• No or limited transportation

• Inadequate services for men

• Lack of youth-friendly services.

Emerging Issues in Family Planning

Many women of reproductive age can benefit from preconception care (care before pregnancy).

Preconception care has been defined as a set of interventions designed to identify and reduce risks to a woman’s health and improve pregnancy outcomes through prevention and management of health conditions.

Preconception care can significantly reduce birth defects and disorders caused by preterm birth.

Elements of preconception care should be integrated into every primary care visit for women of reproductive age.

Preconception care must not be limited to a single visit to a health care provider, but should rather be a process of care designed to meet the needs of an individual.

As part of comprehensive preconception care, providers should encourage patients to develop a reproductive life plan.

A reproductive life plan is a set of goals and action steps based on personal values and resources about whether and when to become pregnant and have (or not have) children.

Providers also must educate patients about how their reproductive life plan impacts contraceptive and medical decision-making.

Increased awareness of the importance of preconception care can be achieved through public outreach and improved collaboration between health care providers. Currently, only about 30.3% of women report receiving pre-pregnancy health counseling.

Future efforts should promote research to further define the evidence-based standards of preconception care, determine its cost-effectiveness, and improve tracking of the proportion of women obtaining these services.

"MEN WHO BOASTS WITH THEIR BIG MANHOODS AND THOSE WHO BLEACHED SKIN WON’T MAKE IT TO HEAVEN" - GHANAIAN PROPHET

Pophet Ebenezer Adarkwa Opambour Yiadom is the leader of the Ebenezer Miracle Worship Center in Kumasi, Ghana.

The popular man of God who is well known for self-proclaimed spiritual powers and extreme Christian practices which have often sparked national outrage with many accusing him of being a fake pastor has disclosed that men with big and oversized manhood will not make it to heaven.

According to him, men who for sexual promiscuity bleach their skins and do other things just to attract the opposite sex and men who take pride about their big manhood are bound for hell fire.

In his assertion, it encourages lusts among people and tends to frustrate other men who are less endowed to seek help elsewhere which later turns out bad for them.

In a sermon in his church, Opambour highlighted the need for this generation to forego worldly lusts and seek the way of the Lord because judgment beckons everybody.

“Nobody is above judgment; not even a beautiful lady with big breasts that satisfy men during sexual intercourse”, he preached.

” You are an honourable man who has bleached your skin, trimmed your hair; you have done waves and the ladies say you’re handsome; hey fine boy, you are not above judgment”, he continued.

“You’re also a man, all the women say your joystick is big; women are praising you because of your joystick, women are buying you cars, because of your joystick women are even buying you clothes; I’m telling you that your big joystick can’t take you to heaven so repent”, he fumed.

NOSE BLEEDING IN CHILDREN

Epitaxis, commonly known as Nose bleeding are common in kids between the ages of 3 to 10 years old, and mostly are caused by nose-picking or dry air. They can be scary, but are rarely cause for alarm. Most will stop on their own and can be easily managed at home.

Allergies also can cause problems, as doctors may prescribe medicine to control an itchy, runny, or stuffy nose. The medicine can dry out nasal membranes, leading to nosebleeds.

An injury or blow to the nose can cause bleeding, but most are not a serious problem. But if your child has a facial injury that causes a bloody nose and you can’t stop the bleeding after 10 minutes or have other concerns about the injury, get medical care right away.

While nosebleeds are rarely serious, there might be a problem if they happen a lot. If your child gets nosebleeds more than once a week, get medical help. Usually, frequent nosebleeds are easily treated.

Sometimes tiny blood vessels inside the nose are irritated and don’t heal, which happens more often in kids with ongoing allergies or who get a lot of colds. A health professional might be able to help in these cases.

There are, actually, two kinds of nosebleeds. An anterior nosebleed occurs when the blood vessels in the front of the nose break and bleed.

A posterior nosebleed occurs in the back or the deepest part of the nose. In this case, blood flows down the back of the throat. Posterior nosebleeds can be dangerous.

Since most nosebleeds in kids are caused by nose-picking or irritation from hot dry air, it can  easily be prevented by:

1.) Keeping a child’s nails short to prevent injuries from nose-picking.

2.) Keeping the inside of a child’s nose moist with saline (saltwater) nasal spray or gel, or dab antibiotic ointment gently around the opening of the nostrils.

3.) Run a cool-mist humidifier (or vaporizer) in bedrooms if the air in your home is dry. Keep the machine clean to prevent mildew buildup.

4.) Make sure your kids wear protective athletic equipment during sports or other activities that could cause a nose injury.

5.) Even with proper precautions, kids can still get a bloody nose occasionally especially while playing. So if your child gets a nosebleed take the necessary precautions before getting medical care.

There are many causes of nosebleeds. A sudden or infrequent nosebleed is rarely serious. If you have frequent nosebleeds, you could have a more serious problem.

Dry air is the most common cause of nosebleeds. Living in a dry climate and using a central heating system can dry out the nasal membranes, which are tissues inside the nose.

This dryness causes crusting inside the nose. Crusting may itch or become irritated. If your nose is scratched or picked, it can bleed.

Taking antihistamines and decongestants for allergies, cold, or sinus problems can also dry out the nasal membranes and cause nosebleeds. Frequent nose blowing is another cause of nosebleeds.

Other common causes of nosebleeds include:

Other causes of nosebleeds include:

Most nosebleeds don’t require medical attention. However, you should seek medical attention if your nosebleed lasts longer than 20 minutes, or if it occurs after an injury. This may be a sign of a posterior nosebleed, which is more serious.

Injuries that might cause a nosebleed include a fall, a car accident, or a punch in the face. Nosebleeds that occur after an injury may indicate a broken nose, skull fracture , or internal bleeding.

TWO UNDERGRADUATES DIE DURING FOURSOME SEX ROMP IN IMO

Tragedy struck at a hostel in Imo State, on Tuesday, as two undergraduates of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, were found dead while allegedly engaged in sex romp with a female student of the institution.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Orlando Ikeokwu, who confirmed the development to our correspondent on Wednesday, said the deceased students were suspected to have abused drugs during the sex romp.

The police spokesperson, gave the names of the dead victims as Ugochukwu Kingsley and one Richard, while the third victim, Aka Uche, 27, and the female victim, Onyinyechi Okafor, were receiving treatment in hospital.

He said the incident occurred at the Sunshine Lodge in Ihiagwa, near the FUTO campus.

According to him, the police personnel, who evacuated the corpses and took the two unconscious victims to hospital, recovered substances suspected to be Indian hemp and tramadol from the scene.

Ikeokwu stated, “On April 2, information was received from the caretaker of the Sunshine Lodge in Ihiagwa, Owerri, that the students of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Ugochukwu Kingsley, Richard and one Aka Uche were engaged in a sex romp with one Onyinyechi Okafor, also a student of the same university.

“Police detectives from the Nekede Division promptly mobilised to the scene and found the four victims completely naked and unconscious. The police operatives recovered substances suspected to be Indian hemp and tramadol from the scene.

“The victims were immediately conveyed to the police clinic and two of the victims, Kingsley and Richard, were certified dead by the medical doctor on duty.

“The corpses have been deposited in the morgue of the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, for autopsy, while the female victim, whose condition is yet to be stabilised, and uche have been referred to the FMC, Owerri, for further medical attention.

“The families of the deceased have been contacted, while the conditions of the surviving victims are still being closely monitored.”

Ikeokwu said the state Commissioner of Police frowned on drug abuse and other illicit acts by youths, whose parents were working hard to ensure that their future was guaranteed.

When contacted, the Public Relations Officer, FUTO, Uche Nwelue, said the institution was still investigating to confirm if the victims were its students.

Nwelue stated, “We are still investigating to ascertain if truly they are students of FUTO. You know that the hostel where the incident occurred, is being occupied by students from different institutions.

“Apart from FUTO students, who live there, students of the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, also live there. We have to conclude our investigation first before we can come up with an official position on the incident. But I have read about it online.”

IMPORTANCE OF ADEQUATE SLEEP HEALTH EDUCATION

Poor sleep health is a common problem with most adults who reports insufficient sleep or rest at least 15 out of every 30 days.

The public health burden of chronic sleep loss and sleep disorders, coupled with low awareness of poor sleep health among the general population, health care professionals, and policymakers, necessitates a well-coordinated strategy to improve sleep-related health.

Sleep, like nutrition and physical activity, is a critical determinant of health and well-being.

Sleep is a basic requirement for infant, child, and adolescent health and development.

Sleep loss and untreated sleep disorders influence basic patterns of behavior that negatively affect family health and interpersonal relationships.

Fatigue and sleepiness can reduce productivity and increase the chance for mishaps such as medical errors and motor vehicle or industrial accidents.

Adequate sleep is necessary to:

° Fight off infection

° Support the metabolism of sugar to prevent diabetes

° Perform well in school

° Work effectively and safely

Sleep timing and duration affect a number of endocrine, metabolic, and neurological functions that are critical to the maintenance of individual health. If left untreated, sleep disorders and chronic short sleep are associated with an increased risk of:

• Heart disease

• High blood pressure

• Obesity

• Diabetes

All-cause mortality

Sleep health is a particular concern for individuals with chronic disabilities and disorders such as arthritis, kidney disease, pain, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, and depression. Among older adults, the cognitive and medical consequences of untreated sleep disorders decrease health-related quality of life, contribute to functional limitations and loss of independence, and are associated with an increased risk of death from any cause.

The odds of being a short sleeper (defined as someone who sleeps less than 6 hours a night) have increased significantly over the past years.

Competition between sleep schedules, employment, and lifestyle is a recent trend. Intermittent sleep disturbances due to lifestyle choices are associated with temporary fatigue, disorientation, and decreased alertness.

Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB), which includes sleep apnea, is another serious threat to health. SDB is characterized by intermittent airway obstruction or pauses in breathing. People with untreated SDB have 2 to 4 times the risk of heart attack and stroke.

Obesity is a significant risk factor for SDB, and weight loss is associated with a decrease in SDB severity.

SDB in Children:
Studies have shown that African American children are at least twice as likely to develop SDB than children of European descent.

The risk of SDB during childhood is associated with low socioeconomic status independent of obesity and other risk factors.

Left untreated, SDB in children is associated with difficulties in school, metabolic disorders, and future heart disease risk.

SDB in Older Adults:
SDB may affect 20 to 40 percent of older adults and, if left untreated, is associated with a 2- to 3-fold increased risk of stroke and mortality.

Sleep health education and promotion strategies are needed to address disparities in sleep health across age, race, education, and socioeconomic groups.

Health education and promotion programs can increase awareness of common sleep disorders, such as insomnia, restless leg syndrome, and SDB.

Sleep health education programs in workplaces can promote better work schedule patterns and motivate managers and workers to adopt strategies that reduce risks to health and safety.

Without sleep health education, individuals often prioritize other activities over sleep and accept constant sleepiness and sleep disruption as inevitable.
